Costa, Nadal and Robredo Ride in High Style in Stuttgart

ATP, July 17, 2024

At the 25th anniversary year of the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart, Germany, Spanish stars Albert Costa and Rafael Nadal took part in a unique experience, going for a ride in a vintage 1951 Mercedes 300d Cabriolet that had driven around the likes of German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer among others. It was a mixing of old and new generations as Spain's veteran star took the steering wheel with 17-year-old Nadal, who isn't old enough to drive, sitting in the backseat. "It's a very valuable car," said Costa. "Coming from the Mercedes museum, I have to make sure not to scratch it."

Nadal enjoyed the experience so much he joined countryman TOMMY ROBREDO for another spin on Thursday, this time going through Stuttgart in a Mercedes-Benz CLK 500 Cabriolet. Robredo, a self-professed car aficionado, took the wheel as they drove from the players' hotel to the Mexican restaurant Enchilada, driving up the Killesberg, down into the city and past the famous Staatsgalerie and the picturesque Schlosspark. "The car was really nice to ride in," said Robredo. "It was a really great experience going through Stuttgart with open air around us."

It's Summertime - MercedesCup Players Drive to Summer Cocktails in Stuttgart City Center

A quick trip to the city center for an (alcohol-free) cocktail - the main and title sponsor of the 25th MercedesCup made it possible. The automobile corporation lent players Tommy Robredo and Rafael Nadal a noble cabriolet for an evening out at the Mexican restaurant Enchillada. The only drop of vermouth for the shooting star Nadal: The Mallorquiner is only 17 years old and does not yet have his driving license. That meant he was forced to let his older colleague take over the wheel to drive the brand new Mercedes-Benz CLK 500 cabriolet safely down from the Killesberg, past the palace park and the state art gallery into the city center and back.
